So today in English class, we had some mini lesson about several figurative languages with Mr. Rob. Basically I learned 10 figurative languages, and surprisingly I knew half of them. Here are the notes that I took:
-Simile: using the word “like” or “as” in comparing some things
Example: The pizza is like a heaven on earth
-Metaphor: two things are being compared without the word “like” or “as”
Example: Men are dogs
-Personification: giving human traits to object / ideas
Example: the whale is shouting
-Hyperbole: exaggerating to show strong feeling
Example: omg she’d kill me
-Understatement: expression with less strength than expected. It is also the opposite of hyperbole
Example: I’ll be there in a second
-Onomatopoeia: a word that makes a sound
Example: KABOOM, BAZOOKA, BANG!
-Idiom: a saying that isn’t meant to be taken literally. It doesn’t mean what it says
Example: break a leg (it means good luck)
-Pun: a form of wordplay in which words have a double meaning
-Proverb: a figurative saying in which a bit of wisdom is given
Example: an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
-Oxymoron: when two words are put together that contradict each other. “Opposite”
Example: Jumbo Shrimp.
After taking some notes from the presentation, we played a game that is related to what we had just learned (Jeopardy). It was actually pretty fun, since I love playing games. Unluckily my group only got 30 points for the game, but we’re not the worst group though. By playing this game, we could still learn so much while we’re having fun! I totally love today’s English class activity!!:)<3
